Do your teeth look longer, making your smile appear “toothy”? Or perhaps you experience a sharp pain in your teeth when exposed to hot and cold drinks? These are the most common signs of gum recession. When left untreated, gum recession can progress to cavities and tooth decay, gum disease, and eventual tooth loss.
At Periodontal Associates, our team of certified and experienced periodontists specialize in treating gum recession. Among dozens of periodontists in Mississauga and across the GTA, you will find that we’re the most dedicated to treating receding gums and providing long-term periodontal care.
What is gum recession?
Simply, gum recession happens when gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, exposing the roots. Over time, pockets can form between the teeth and gum line, causing plaque to build up and the tissues and bone structures to suffer damage, eventually causing tooth loss. Depending on the amount of gum tissue that has receded, gum recession can be mild, moderate, or severe.
Symptoms of Gum Recession
Gum recession happens over time, so it’s usually not until your smile is noticeably different or the symptoms are persistent that most people see a periodontist. The best way to treat gum recession is through early detection.
Here are the most common signs of gum recession to watch out for:
- Receding or “pulling back” gum tissues around the teeth
- Sensitive teeth
- Swollen and red gums
- Pain or tenderness in the gums
- Changes to your bite
- Loose teeth
- A “toothy” smile or teeth appear to be bigger
- Exposed roots of the teeth
- Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth.
Causes of Gum Recession
Gum tissues recede due to a number of factors. Gum recession typically happens due to poor oral health and hygiene habits. Here are the most common and urgent causes of gum recession:
- Gum or periodontal disease that, when left untreated, degrade gum tissues and supporting bone structure.
- Poor oral hygiene, such as insufficient brushing and flossing, which can cause plaque to build up and harden into tartar along the gum line.
- Aggressive or over-brushing, which can peel away the enamel protecting the teeth and injure the gums.
- Your genetic history, as some people may be more susceptible to gum disease
- Hormonal changes, such as fluctuations in female hormone levels, can make the gums more sensitive and vulnerable.
- Lifestyle habits and choices, including smoking tobacco, grinding or clenching teeth, and having piercings on the lip and tongue can irritate the gums, and exert too much pressure .
- Crooked teeth or a misaligned bite can exert pressure on the gums and bone.
How is gum recession treated?
Our gum recession treatments
Also known as deep cleaning, your periodontist will remove the plaque and tartar build-up in the surfaces of the teeth and roots below the gum line. This deep cleaning technique, known as scaling and root planing involves smoothing out the exposed root to prevent bacteria from building up. Your periodontist may also prescribe antibiotics to kill any remaining harmful b
In severe gum recession, scaling and root planing will not be effective since the pockets have grown too deep and bone loss is excessive. When this happens, soft tissue grafting is required to treat gum recession.
Your periodontist will perform a soft tissue graft by taking healthy gum tissues in other parts of your mouth and grafting or attaching it where the gums have receded. There are three most common types of gum grafts:
- Connective tissue graft: Uses tissue from under a flap cut into the roof of the mouth, called the subepithelial connective tissue, which is then grafted onto the exposed root.
- Free gingival graft: Uses tissue taken directly from the roof of the mouth (rather than from under the skin).
- Pedicle graft: If you have enough healthy gum tissue surrounding the treatment side, it can be used as a gum graft.
While recovery is immediate in scaling and root planing, it’s different in soft tissue grafting. Since it’s designed to treat an advanced degree of gum recession, recovery time will depend on the size of the treatment area and the number of affected teeth, as well as the type of gum graft. In most cases recovery from soft tissue grafting can take about two weeks.
Why do you need a periodontist to treat gum recession?
Everyone’s first stop in case of dental concerns is the dentist. But when it comes to the gums, you need a periodontist. At Periodontal Associates, our periodontists provide this specialized care and advanced treatments like soft tissue grafting in order to treat gum recession.
Periodontists are dentists who complete a three-year post-graduate specialization after dental school. They undergo advanced training in diagnosing and treating problems that affect the gums, tissues, and bones that support the teeth. Periodontists treat gum recession and gum disease, as well as perform oral surgery for dental implants.
How much does soft tissue grafting cost?
Soft tissue grafting is an advanced treatment for moderate to severe gum recession. It’s a periodontal procedure that requires local anesthetic and is performed in two stages—harvesting healthy tissue and grafting it onto the affected area. The cost of soft tissue grafting by a periodontist in Mississauga can vary based on the difficulty of the surgery and the number of teeth affected. Keep in mind that everyone has unique periodontal care needs, resulting in varying costs
Here Are Some Factors That Determine the Cost of Gum Recession:
Gum recession can be mild, moderate, or severe, each presenting with varying degrees of recession and size of the affected area. These can be treated with either scaling and root planing, or soft tissue grafting, which differ in complexity and procedure length.
Do you have dental insurance? The higher your coverage is, the lower your out-of-pocket cost for gum recession treatment.
Most importantly, the success of your gum recession treatment depends on your periodontist. Choose a periodontist in Mississauga with extensive training and experience in treating gum recession, with high success rates and healthy and satisfied patients.
