Bone Grafting Procedure Mississauga

Bone Grafting Procedure Mississauga

Sometimes, the condition of the patient’s jawbone is not suitable for dental implants. Where there are missing teeth, the jawbone can atrophy or be reabsorbed. In these cases, the quality and quantity of bone needed for effective placement of the dental implant is too poor to work. However, by getting the best Bone Grafting Procedure Mississauga has to offer, it is now possible to regrow bone where it is required for the implant to anchor properly. The infused bone provides enough length and width for the implant to stabilize, which restores functionality while looking esthetically appropriate.

For Minor Bone Grafting repairs – caused by previous extractions, gum disease, or injury – bone is taken from tissue banks or from elsewhere in the patient’s mouth. This is referred to as Guided Bone Regeneration, utilizing special membranes that dissolve under the gum to protect the graft and encourage bone regeneration.

Major Bone Grafting Procedure Mississauga

Where there is a major defect of the jaw – a result of traumatic injury, tumor surgery, or congenital defects – a Major Bone Graft is required. The patient’s own bone is needed to repair a defect of this magnitude. The harvesting site is dependent on the size of defect, but most often bone is taken from the hip/iliac crest or lateral knee/tibia. This level of bone extraction usually requires an operating room.

Sinus Grafting / Sinus Lift Grafting

When Dental Implants are needed for the upper jaw, the position of the sinus wall will affect whether or not the implant will anchor properly. Because of the positioning of the maxillary sinuses (behind the cheek and above the top row of teeth), the wall between the sinuses and mouth can be very thin. When teeth have been extracted from the upper jaw, the sinus can enlarge and leave the area even more hollow. A Sinus Graft or Sinus Lift can be performed to increase bone in this area to a level suitable for implants. Periodontists go in through the area of the extracted tooth to open the sinus membrane and insert donor bone into the sinus. When healing is complete, the new bone has infused with the jawbone, and the area is ready to receive and stabilize a dental implant.

Sinus augmentation and implant placement can be completed in a single procedure if there is enough bone between the upper jaw and sinus. If there is not an enough bone in the region to stabilize an implant, the procedure will be broken up into two parts: sinus augmentation and implant placement.

Ridge Augmentation

In some cases, the jawbone ridge is too thin for the placement of conventional dental implants. A bone graft is used to increase the height and width of the jaw ridge to a size suitable for implantation. The procedure requires expanding the ridge inserting the bone graft. Patients will require several months to heal and allow the bone to mature enough for placement of the dental implant.
